[ Outside of Yelena's door is a small box containing ... a fruitcake. Big enough for one if she wants to pace herself or a couple of people if she wanted to share with anybody.
As boasted, Yzak is a good cook, and put consideration into making this one so enjoyment is entirely relative to Yelena's personal taste. ]
A letter, just outside her door, the morning after Christmas
[ Gift from Majima is hidden in a traditional Christmas bag. Buried under a bunch of differently (wildly, often) flavoured Kit-Kats there's a pair of shades, a bit reminiscing of the steampunk style of Yelena's Halloween outfit. Just a bit. Hiding in plain sight. ]
The black one can go through steel and reinforced concrete β€οΈ Try not to use it on the station.
Belated Merry Xmas,
Tony
Inside the case, she'll find a neatly-presented assortment of rope, carabiners, and several different grappling hooks, ranging from one sized for wrist deployment, up to that matte black one. All of them have a little β΄΅ etched into their base. )
[ by way of yelena's cover story, at the very least; it's an amusing little study in seeing what her friends have chosen for themselves here, even if performing as though they're all strangers to one another is a lonely business. ]
sounds exhausting, if you ask me how are you holding up?
I think at this point I am more infamous for being an idiot who can't talk right.
[The hardest part is keeping up the stupid accent, which she actually does slip out of a lot because it's a pain, especially when talking about serious things. Like starving.]
But that's fine. People underestimating me works, too.
[ sometime after marta has gotten settled in the infirmary to recover from her injuries after scorpion's bend, she finally had the wherewithal to reach out to yelena. her voice is worn and tentative, but no less sincere in her gratitude. ]
Yelena? It's Marta. Did you get settled back onto the station okay?
I wanted to thank you again for your help. I literally owe you my life.
[Yelena was a little late getting back, so Marta taking her time works out pretty well. She's probably a little behind the rest of the crew in getting settled, but still, Yelena doesnβt take too long to respond.]
Oh, hello. Mostly I am just really glad to have easy access to real food again.
[She was really sick of snake and desert poultry.]
[You're welcome. She wasnβt just going to leave him like that, she understands what the loss of autonomy does to a person. If she could have snapped him out of it, she would have.]
[ Few words, but there's something in his voice there. Is that concern, for once unmasked by humour? Oh why, yes, it is. Sam's checking in, because of course he does, but more than anything it's right there in his tone that he's been worried. ]
I'm okay, I just find this whole situation very irritating.
[This is, in fact, the truth. She hasn't had any kind of existential crisis about the Hell situation due just thinks the whole thing is a scam and is mad about it.]
[ It was a pretty great idea that made a lot of sense.
They were already roommates and they got along well, and Yelena is one of the people on the station he trusts most, so. It's got nothing to do with the fact that β no, you know what, we're definitely not going to think about that right now.
... even when they've agreed to a cover story that blatantly brings those thoughts up to the forefront at every turn.
But it's fine, you know, it's cool, he's cool β this is a plan that couldn't go wrong. At all.
They find a two-person apartment in one of a number of dormitory neighbourhoods at Archway University and make their base of operations there, just another facet of their cover. It turns out it isn't too hard to fake being a student, finding a way to gain an ID, and blend into the student-body. Classes, essays, labs: that's all the required stuff β and then there's a whole lot of free time in between for a student to 'live their life' and explore the city on their own. It's almost too easy.
Shang-chi has never been to post-secondary though, so it takes a couple of false starts and a few stupid questions, but after a week of fumbling he thinks he's pretty much got the hang of it. Some of his classes are even interesting.
This morning, he packs up his bag (which is really only a digital-tablet and a bottle of lunch-pills) and makes his way over to Yelena's room, sets a couple of knocks against her door before he waits.
[Yelena answers her door wearing this and a backpack in a matching style. She grins when she sees Shang-Chi, very enthusiastic about working with him this mission.]
Yes, absolutely. Do you think I look enough like a university student? I've never been one before.
[Yelena told Mal just last mission that when choosing a cover story you should pick one that you're kind of familiar with. She's not exactly following her own advice here, but she's also pretty good at figuring things out. And besides she still enjoys trying new things. And a university in space is very new.]
[ yet another flyer ends up on every orber's door, evidently by the same culprit as last time, except now it's a more colorful display:
the back of the flyer features more details about the play and its characters, and soon enough, an announcement from rita herself goes public, giving more context about the event, which all can sign up for. ]
[ It's not like morning coffees are a fixed date at a very fixed time... and still, Sam's rushed when he arrives in the kitchen, because yeah... he's late. Has made a routine of having coffee here with Yelena at roughly the same time every morning. And oh, he looks like he was in a hurry. Definitely missed a button on his shirt, and while he doesn't have bedhead, there's a distinct air of 'just fell out of bed and hurried here' to him.
Ahem.
Still - he winces when he spots Yelena. Yeah it might not have an unofficial time stamp, but he still hates running late for something he's very happily integrated into his morning routine on the Ximilia. ]
[Some quiet afternoon after they're back on the station but before the sunburn on Natasha's nose has completely had the choice to heal, she comes around Yelena's room holding a package wrapped in tissue paper.
[Yelena is sitting cross legged on her bed sewing some hidden pockets into a pair of awesome pants. She does seem especially surprised at Nat letting herself in.]
